Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
